Why Everyone Wanted the Worst Car in the World

The Yugo is widely regarded as the worst car ever. It was poorly constructed, nowhere near reliable, and not so easy on the eyes. The Yugo was the butt of every joke and the junker in every garage. But for all its shortcomings, it sold like hotcakes when it arrived in the U.S. In this episode of Wheelhouse, Nolan tells the story of the Yugo's creation and makes the case for updating its reputation from worst car to huge success.

So I definitely got a big part of this story wrong: the assertion that Yugoslavia was part of the Soviet Union. This Is incorrect. In the West, this assumption can be traced back to Yugoslavia’s formation in 1943. During WWII, the Allies: The US, UK and USSR supported Yugoslavia’s fight against the fascist Axis occupation. We just kinda assumed they stayed allied with the USSR, but that’s not what happened. After the war, relations between Yugoslavia and the USSR fell apart, with Yugoslavia denouncing Stalinism completely and forming its own socialist government. Yugoslavia was in fact on the Western edge of the Iron Curtain, and maintained a delicate balancing act between Western and Eastern bloc countries. According to globalvoices.org “its independence from both the Eastern and the Western blocs was a key feature of its national identity.” I sincerely apologize for the error and for any offense it may have caused; and I will be more diligent and discerning in my research moving forward. Thanks for your time. -Nolan

Again mistake, your American propaganda is wrong again. Yugoslavia was never Soviet. Communist yes but never in Soviet union. You had west (NATO today) And Soviet, and also there was a third party called independent or something like that, well we were in the middle and didn't belong to West or East. Tito was hanging out with African countries and that wasn't Soviet Union. Yugo was crappy but cost double here and was worst than version you got. We paid for your cheap import to balance the cost to factory. Also Kragujevac and Zastava have nothing with Croatia and Bosnia it's like you compare Detroit belong to California or Florida. We didn't have much but had enough factories and we had everything until your Democracy came here and that was the end of humanity here. you are the worst of the worst.

Noah, it's still something great about yugo. When it need to be repaired, it's ultimately cheaper then any other car. So if you wanna made some compromisees it's more than fine. To do repairs just need to know what's wrong whit it, buy a spear part, and from tolls you need just screwdriver, 5 wrenches (8,10,13,17,19mm), few pieces of wire and job is done. Everybody know it's more than bad car but still love him because it's cheep and standard in Balkan is not great, speciali in the 1990s. It's simple people was happy because they can afford any car, that's the reason why is the great car. Just keep up whit nice content you are great.

I have quite a few problems with this video. First and foremost, Yugoslavia was never the part of the Soviet Union. It was socialist country, which played an important role in Cold war, so you two big shots wouldn't wreck the whole World. Please check your history facts. And that is such an important segment of this video, because much of your cultural understanding and presenting the Yugo comes from this misinformation. Moreover, it was cheaply built, but it wasn't that bad. That car is pure mechanics. You have no computer in the car, but you have a clutch and actual gearbox, something that, I have heard, Americans struggle with. Sorry for this, it may not be true. How you service Yugo is the answer how much it will serve you. You can ask that every single mechanic from the Balkans and pretty much everyone will tell you the same. Even today in Serbia we drive Yugo, and they stopped manufacturing it like 15 years ago. It is an ultimate car for rally here, many first drivers are driving it etc.

One more thing about YUGO you didn't tell: For Zastava to achieve the low selling price you mentioned, they had to reduce the quality of this car even further, so the cars you got in USA were even lower quality than the ones for home market. Also, at the time, most the production cars here were in 40-60bhp range, so lack of power wasnt so obvious as in USA. And two more things about Yugoslavia: Among those "other smaller counties" is Slovenia, which was the most developed part of Yugoslavia at the time. Yugoslavia was never Soviet (as a few other commenters pointed out). It was the only communist county that stood up against Soviet.

They introduced the Yugo brand in Germany in 1990, but unfortunately the civil war in former jugoslavia stopped the production in 1992 and the importer went bust. I can´t even remember seeing one in the flesh and even after looking for years there is almost never one up for sale in Germany or its neighbours.

Yugo is not from the Soviet Union. Zastava is building Fiat 500L up to this date. I know a lot of pre 90'ies Zastavas that are still functional. I know there were some issues with sending cars to the US, but Zastava actually opened the doors of US market for VW and Audi and many other European manufacturers. For the Yugo, it and Škoda were the most innovative products from Eastern Block countries. In 1992, when you say Yugo closed, actually, the Yugoslavia collapsed in the four year war. And the title of the worst car ever, it was manufactured by the TopGear journalist as a sarcastic view of Balkan wars.

Thanks to this export business, domestic Yugos became somewhat better because, eventually, all tiny improvements for American market found their way here. Overall, main problems with Yugo were terrible build quality and lack of proper control in the factory. Concept and technologies were sound for cheap city car from that era.

It's a 1971 Fiat 127 built REALLY cheap in a comunist country (not part of the soviet block by the way, Yugoslavia was a Non-Aligned Country) and sold in the eighties in a power loving car market. The result was a bit inevitable. I have to say that I grew up in a eighties small cheap FIAT, and it was made better for sure... but not any faster. Hell even TODAY best selling car in Italy isn't faster than that. Probably that's why I don't get how you are so upset by the Yugo speed: yeah, it's cheap and it goes from 0-60 in 14 and a bit seconds... what did you expect? 😅😂

@Mihajlo Čigoja I think you got it wrong. Yugo has very little in common with Zastava 101. It was independently developed with the assistance from Fiat which gave Zastava technical documentation for model 127. So in some way Nolan was correct when he said that Yugo was based on Fiat 127. It was not just redesigned/simplified copy of it, but model 127 was used as basis for Yugo.
  • Mihajlo Čigoja
    Mihajlo Čigoja

@Mandrak789 He said that yugo was based on fiat 127 probably because there was resemblance between the two. While there is a lot od connection between two cars, yugo was not based on fiat 127 it was based on zastava 101 which was based on zastava 128 which was straight out copy of fiat 128 :D Boxy shape, and weird looks of yugo was because VW Golf mk1... At the time golf mk1 was being produced in TAS in Sarajevo, and people were going crazy for them, and zastava wanted peace of the market, so they redesigned zastava 101 to look more like golf. Which ended up in car that looks boxy but has same old fiat chassis and engine. Yeah, I agree it sucked, but for 18yo me it was the best car in the world :D :D :D

10:00 So, either your knowledge or your research encourage you to assess, what automotive standards were normal at the time, when the Yugo was offered in the US?! Getting upset about build quality, to be very honest, during that historic period, in the US... You'd rather not DARE a comparison here. NO! JUST DON'T! Mexicans build better "American" cars today, than these poor people in the SFRY, including cars built by AMERICANS (on an average base from 1985 to 2085 (roughly estimated))! Yes, Yugo's standards were poor, but just not covered up by a vegetable of a president and budgets for "mass media manipulation". How much of a car did you purchase in relation to its lifetime or average reliability/usability?!

The Yugo was a huge hit in Yugoslavia. Due to it being so cheap, they were everywhere. A lot of people drove them even in the early 2000s, including my parents, when i was like 3 years old. Greetings from Slovenia, former Yugoslavia member (one of rhe smaller countries).

6:00 Are you going to mention the Bricklin SV as a major accomplishment, or are you going to diminish it?! As people are expecting it from a capitalist American, zrying to prove the rest of the WORLD... whatever...

Aj ne seri. Kad vi strancerosi uhvatite pricati o nasim industrijama... 😜

Never owned or drove a Yugo. The worst car I ever owned was a 1981 Vauxhall Chevette, which was an Opel Kadett adapted to the masochistic British and Commonwealth market by being fitted with all the worst parts of the Viva: the engine, suspension, gearbox (the reversing light wires tended to fall off, and the gearbox had to be removed to refit them)the suspension and the electrical system. Not as bad as a Ural motorcycle I'd earlier made the mistake of buying, but close.

Yugoslavia was a comunist country but it was not a part of Soviet union or a Soviet sattalite state like the others. We could travel Visa free All over the world and euripe offcourse work there and had a much higher i come than Soviet Block countries. And Tito and Stalin hated each other so Yugoslavia turnd west soon.

Jugo 45, a song by Zabranjeno Pušenje is actually about the period Yugo was made in, a nostalgic view on the last (good) years of Jugoslavija.

As someone who grew up in Serbia so many things are wrong with this history video it's not even funny. We were not communist county. We were communist - socialist. Also there was never Stalin in Serbia. We had Tito. Also we were never under the influence of Soviet Union. Check your fact's before videos.

Nikola Tesla was Serbian, and Zastava was Serbian. The ideal end to this would be that Elon Musk associates his company Tesla with Zastava factory in Kragujevac, and start building a new Tesla Ýugo
